2012 STUDY CANADA Summer Institute for K-12 Educators

A Capital View of Canada: Nations within a Nation

Monday July 2 - Saturday July 7, 2012 (Ottawa, ON and Montréal QC)

What did 2011 participants think about "STUDY CANADA"?
"This was the best teacher workshop ever - to be immersed in Canadian culture right here in Ottawa. The mixture of in-class lectures to hands-on learning and tours was amazing! It was the epitome of true "engagement" learning. History came alive this week for me." - Mary Snow Thornton (Orangeburg, SC)

Information about the Annual STUDY CANADA Summer Institute

  • Earn 3 university quarter credits (C/AM 410 - WWU) or 40 clock hours as you learn about Canada, its capital, and the distinct cultures that have formed the second largest nation in the world — all within comfortable and unique classroom settings with presentations by university faculty (WWU, UW, U Ottawa, UQAM), government officials and tribal leaders.
  • Banish stereotypes and meet real Canadians while exploring Ottawa and Montréal, two of Canada's most historically important cities.
  • Witness parliamentary democracy with special sessions in the Parliament Buildings and learn about the importance of Canada-US relations at the US Embassy. History will come alive at the Canadian Museum of Civilization and during customized tours in Ottawa and Old Montréal.
  • Develop a lesson plan on Canada that meets NCSS/state standards, gain tools to create a PowerPoint presentation on Canada suitable for your students/colleagues and perhaps even become a K-12 STUDY CANADA Teacher Associate with NRC support in offering presentations about Canada in your region.
  • Receive materials at a Resource Fair to improve curriculum connections to Canada for your students.
  • $300 travel awards and $500 scholarships are available, check your eligibility.
